Showa American Story is finally offering a much clearer picture of how its bizarre “Showa America” concept works as an actual game. AUTOMATON's hands-on session with the build appearing around gamescom 2026 suggests that beneath the pop-culture mashup lies a surprisingly structured action RPG.

The demo was divided into four slices covering story-driven combat, life inside Choko's RV, semi-open-world exploration, and a major boss encounter. A new gamescom In-Game Trailer has also revealed the Japanese voice cast while showing more footage captured directly from the game.

The Combat Is More Serious Than the Premise Suggests

AUTOMATON's hands-on describes a battle system built around light and heavy attacks, dodging, firearms, Rage, stamina, and enemy Break Gauges.

Normal actions build Rage, which can then be spent on powerful attacks. Filling it completely allows Choko to use an ultimate tied to her equipped weapon. Breaking an enemy creates a finisher opportunity, with some finishers also restoring health.

Stamina adds another layer. Most actions consume it, and although Choko can continue moving after it is depleted, her defense drops sharply. Landing a Rage Attack can immediately restore stamina.

Weapon Switching Is Part of the Combo Flow

Choko is not locked to one weapon class.

The demo includes gloves, katana, shotguns, an American flag, and a drill. Each has its own behavior, while certain weapon changes trigger dedicated switch attacks.

Switching to a ranged weapon, for example, can send Choko into a backstep and briefly activate bullet time to create an aiming window.

Perfect dodges, counters, knockdown recovery, an item wheel, and timing-sensitive attacks push the system closer to a character-action RPG than a simple button-masher.

Guren-go Is More Than Transportation

The giant Guren-go RV functions as Choko's moving headquarters.

Inside, players can eat, drink wine or cold beverages, read, train through a mini-game, and take baths. These activities consume AP and can grant different buffs depending on the food or bathing items used.

There is also a housing component. Collectibles found during the journey can be placed on the RV's walls, giving exploration rewards a use beyond inventory completion.

Neo Yokohama Opens Into Semi-Open Exploration

Another Chapter 3 slice takes place around the shopping district at the foot of Neo Yokohama Mountain.

The area contains shops, NPCs, treasure chests, hidden routes, side quests, and mini-games. One particularly strange quest asks Choko to sabotage bicycle tire valves while avoiding suspicion and talking her way out of trouble when noticed.

Other activities include hopscotch and retro arcade games, while some encounters can shift the camera into a side-view perspective reminiscent of classic fighting games.

The Boss Fight Blends Combat, Chases, and QTEs

The fourth demo slice takes place at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Without revealing the larger story context, the encounter moves beyond a conventional boss arena. Combat phases, cutscenes, chase sequences, and deliberately absurd QTEs flow into one another.

AUTOMATON singled it out as one of the demo's strongest sections because it shows the game preserving its parody-heavy personality without abandoning structured action design.

The New Trailer Reveals the Japanese Voice Cast

NEKCOM says the gamescom 2026 trailer consists entirely of footage captured from the actual game, although the showcased build remains in development.

The trailer confirms Yoko Hikasa as Chigusa Choko, Hideo Ishikawa as Michael Hero, Hochu Otsuka as Bubba, and Hikaru Midorikawa as Mutsuki Akitora.

Joji Nakata narrates the video, which moves between battles, daily activities, arcade-style diversions, characters, and the strange cultural fusion defining Showa America.

Why This Matters

1) The absurd presentation hides a real combat system

Rage, stamina, Break Gauges, weapon switching, perfect dodges, and counters give players mechanics to actively learn and manage.

2) The semi-open world is not just space between battles

Odd side quests, arcade games, treasure, secret routes, NPC activity, and camera changes give exploration its own identity.

3) The RV connects exploration to character progression

Guren-go converts items and resources found in the world into buffs, upgrades, activities, and collectible displays.

4) The parody remains completely intact

An American flag as a weapon, a giant drill, bicycle sabotage, and absurd QTEs suggest NEKCOM has not toned down the game's personality while refining its systems.
