The Anime Finally Shows Its Story in Motion

The first Main PV offers a much clearer look at Matsurika's daily life as a court lady in Bailou.

One of its early moments shows Hakuyo realizing just how unusual her abilities are. From there, the trailer begins framing the small talent Matsurika calls “being good at remembering things” as something capable of changing the course of her life.

KANA-BOON Performs “Hanabanashi”

KANA-BOON performs the opening theme “Hanabanashi (花噺)”.

The band says the song was created by blending the emotional intensity of the characters with the cooler atmosphere surrounding the overall story. A portion of the track can already be heard throughout the new PV.

Its flower imagery also fits Matsurika's development as a talent that had gone largely unnoticed begins to bloom.

Rei Tenga, Ho Shisei, and Sho Shunsetsu Join the Cast

Three more major characters now have confirmed anime voices.

Takeo Otsuka voices Rei Tenga, a skilled and earnest military official serving close to Hakuyo. Kotaro Nishiyama plays Ho Shisei, a brilliant civil official who ranked first in the imperial examination and previously taught Hakuyo.

Sho Komura voices Sho Shunsetsu, the student assigned to support and advise Matsurika after she enters Taigaku.

An Exceptional Memory Opens the Door to Government

Matsurika comes from a commoner family and initially works as a palace attendant before her unusually strong memory earns her a promotion to court lady.

Her encounter with Hakuyo begins when she serves as a substitute partner for a matchmaking rehearsal. The emperor quickly recognizes that her ability is more significant than Matsurika herself believes and encourages her toward the imperial examination.

It begins the transformation of a girl who intended to remain in the background into someone capable of influencing her country.

MAHO FILM Handles the Adaptation

MAHO FILM is producing the animation, with Takeshi Mori serving as chief director and Yuichi Nakazawa directing.

Toko Machida handles series composition, Manami Inose provides the character designs, and Takuro Iga composes the score.

The new footage also provides the clearest look yet at how the anime is translating the palace, clothing, court-lady life, and academic environments of the novels.

The Light Novel Has Reached 18 Volumes

Rinne Ishida's original series, illustrated by Izumi, began publication through B's-LOG Bunko in 2017.

Eighteen volumes are currently available, with Volume 19 scheduled for October 15, 2026. The franchise has surpassed 2.68 million copies in circulation including digital editions.

Waka Takase's manga adaptation has also reached 12 collected volumes.

Why This Matters

1) Matsurika's growth is built around an intellectual talent

Her defining ability is not magic or combat strength but memory and the way she learns to turn that ability into something useful in government.

2) The supporting cast is beginning to take shape

Rei Tenga, Ho Shisei, and Sho Shunsetsu expand the story beyond Matsurika and Hakuyo, particularly as her journey moves toward education and official service.

3) KANA-BOON's opening directly reflects her development

“Hanabanashi” was created around the emotional weight of Matsurika choosing a difficult path and allowing a previously hidden talent to bloom.
